Other Worlds, Other Times

Join us in a brave foray into the unknown and uncharted realms of parallel universes. Prepare yourself for a trek, not to outer or inner, but to adjacent space.

Will we find Eden? Lands of Magic? Our heart's desire? Or will we find worlds just like our own?   Some of us may have already visited other universes - the evidence may be confusing memories - improbable places or people we have seen.

We will discuss these things.

The Tourmaline Crystals

Back around 1969, I was hiking in the Jurupa Hills in Southern California. I came across a huge outcropping of granite that had two large black tourmaline crystals in it. They were each as big around as my wrist and they were twinned in an unusual "X" shape. (There were also smaller ones in the rock, most no bigger than a walnut.)
I carried a small notepad, so I made notes on the location. I did back azimuths with my compass to prominent landmarks and listed them in my notes.
I then chipped off a small sample from the end of one of the big crystals.
Afterwards, I placed a small rock cairn beside the fire trail (which was about 50 yards away) so I could quickly find the spot again.

A few days later, I talked the geologist from the San Bernardino County Museum into accompanying me to the site to see the unusual formation. Well, we followed my notes, found my rock cairn with my initials on one of the rocks and went straight to the outcropping. He was excited about the crystals, but upset that he had not brought a camera.

We made a date for the next week and went back, both of us with cameras.

No big crystals. They were gone.
There were just the small ones that had been there before. There was no trace of the big crystals. They had been embedded deeply into the outcropping, but now there was no evidence they had ever been there. The rock was undisturbed, even though we found our old footprints nearby.
We searched the area for a couple of hours and there was no similar outcropping to be found.

We both agreed to 'officially' forget about it or folks would think we were nuts!

When I got home, the little sample that I had chipped off on the first trip was still on my dresser where I had left it. I carried it around for years until I finally lost it.

Now I wonder- did we visit a parallel universe? Did our own universe change?

If I visited another world, at least I had a witness and I brought back an 'artifact.'

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The "fair use" doctrine allows limited reproduction of copyrighted works for educational and research purposes. The relevant portion of the copyright statue provides that the "fair use" of a copyrighted work, including reproduction "for purposes such as criticism, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research" is not an infringement of copyright. The law lists the following factors as the ones to be evaluated in determining whether a particular use of a copyrighted work is a permitted "fair use," rather than an infringement of the copyright: • the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; • the nature of the copyrighted work; • the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and • the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. Although all of these factors will be considered, the last factor is the most important in determining whether a particular use is "fair." Where a work is available for purchase or license from the copyright owner in the medium or format desired, copying of all or a significant portion of the work in lieu of purchasing or licensing a sufficient number of "authorized" copies would be presumptively unfair. Where only a small portion of a work is to be copied and the work would not be used if purchase or licensing of a sufficient number of authorized copies were required, the intended use is more likely to be found to be fair.
