Hi Ken, for this specific reason, as well as a few others (ie. tying autoresponders in with mail list,
managing unsubscribes, etc...) I have chosen to go with
a 3rd party vendor - there are many such as getresponse, proautoresponder (my current choice), Quicktell, etc... who all offer autoresponders AND a
bulk send email option to all or a subset of your list.
As for ISPs ability to track and act on mass mailings.
This would differ greatly by ISP. I know, through
family contacts that work at companies selling DSL,
Cable equipment in to Bell and Rogers, that they are
upgrading their capability to track traffic flows
associated with IP Addresses. In short, this means
that they will have the tools to recognize bursts in
traffic, increases in destination addresses from single
source, etc... They are investing in this for two
reasons - 1) To detect the potential for malicious
attacks or Denial of Service type attacks, and 2) to
become smarter about the traffic running over their
networks - with the real possibility of enforcing limits
on "super users".
If you are sending to hundreds of users, then you are
probably ok, if you are sending to thousands, then you
can get email softwere that will split-send over a
few hours, if you are sending tens of thousands, then
I would probably go to a 3rd party manager.
