Thanks for the advice. It's very helpful. Especially the "academic" tip, Tony.
As it turns out, I was explaining my predicament to a friend. He listened thoughtfully (feigned, I now realize). When I finished, wiping the tears of desparation from my eyes, he stood and hugged me.
He whispered in my ear, "I have Adobe Acrobat. I don't need it, so it's yours. Everything will be OK."
In short, I now have a copy of Acrobat... For a price that's hard to beat.
