Why so many different engines?

Response to QuickTip #37: Simple Searching...

Thanks Ken, for the tip on search engines. I understand search engines, I even use them, until I get frustrated with all the hits they give me to look at. It seems no matter what keywords I use, the results of the search always renders more unrelated hits than ones that are related to my search. What's a person to do?
Why are there so many different search engines? All the ones I've tried are the same way, you get millions of hits in the search results, but only about 5 of those really pertain to what you are searching for.
Any comments?
Thanks again,
