The solution you talk about won't work for me, I'm on a Mac and I will have no need for pagemaker as Canvas 6 does the job of Pagemaker (along with being able to do all of photoshop, illustrator, and the rest of adobe's software)
Canvas is an all in one package, no need for a separate text software, photo, illustration etc. Canvas can perform all of theses in one plus more.
If I were to purchase another piece of software then I would opt for the full version of Acrobat 4.0.
Untill I can afford the package I will have to settle for the pdf output of Canvas. Then I will allow anyone who downloads the book, free upgrades to the book when it gets made into a fully functional pdf book.
