As far as your back-up goes which you didn't have. You probably know this, but there are programs that allow you to scan printed documents, and then the program will convert it to text (for instance in MSWord) which you can then edit.
The program just tries to recognise the characters from the printed document and then converts them into editable text in MSWord. It does make some mistakes, but easy to pick up and correct.
This is much easier than typing the whole lot out again.
I use a program called TextBridge. I'm not sure where you can get it, but maybe someone has some other suggestions.
As far as PDF goes- I'm no fundi. I have the Adobe Acrobat program (not just the reader). I do most my work in MSWord2000, and in the File menu is an option "create PDF file", which converts it straight into adobe PDF.
As I said - I'm no Fundi, but maybe this will help a bit.
I'm sure Ken will have some answers.
