It's been my experience that with few exceptions (my own manuals excluded), very few info-products that are not your own can be sold profitably. It has to do with personalization, 'dealing with the author', individual authority and reputation... these are what prospects want before they do business with you.
This is why few people make money with affiliateships - they are too far removed from the orignator - and it is also why I refuse to offer them for my own works.
It is simply not enough to offer a product written by someone else and expect it to sell in huge quantities.
Why do I exclude my own manuals in this example? Simply - the owners of the Authorized Reprint Rights don't face any competition from me. I rarely promote my manuals now, leaving it to those 20 Rights owners to make money from their investment using their own promotional touch. I give them specific ways to promote my manuals, which are a far better bet than affilateships.
The 'right mix' of information products is easily found, because all you need do is make the information incredibly personal and high-touch. Forget trying to write a generic "instruction" book - what buyers want is your own slant on the topic so they can see how to achieve their own success. This means writing about your day-to-day experiences so that the reader can easily imagine succeeding with it themselves.
Weave in actual experiences, mix some active steps, and before you know it, your manual is unique and ready to enthrall your reader.
You asked about my profit margins. They are about 99%. My only costs are about $130/month for credit card processing and hosting, which means about 1% in overheads. I've said it again and again - this "how-to" manual business... specifically run the way I recommend... is the best type of income producer you'll ever experience.
