The Internet Corporation for Assigned
Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced seven new top-level domain names last Thursday .
This is going to be interesting. No longer are you going to be able to assume that .com is the common business extension, because now the new ".biz" extension has been selected for businesses.
Here are the extensions, chosen from 47 applicants who paid a whopping $50,000 for the privilege:
.biz - for businesses
.name - for personal registrations by name,
.pro - for licensed professionals,
.aero - for air transport,
.info - for any site,
.museum - for museums,
.coop - for business cooperatives.
The new extensions are said to be because the current .com, .net and .org names are all used up, but I don't agree. I've been able to create at least a dozen perfectly good .com name options for several businesses in the last few weeks.
So put your 'creative names' thinking cap on before you pay out for the next new craze.
