I'm an editor, and I never change a person's style or damage it in any way. The trick is to find an editor who is capable of polishing your work WITHOUT changing who you are or leaving any trace of her/himself in your work. They do exist, but they aren't easy to find. (BTW, this isn't an ad; I'm not doing it anymore.)
And the other thing that ain't necessarily so...
Those dangling participles bug the hell out of some of us. Call me a stickler, but I personally believe proper (or at least decent) grammar is an absolute necessity. I think it's a pox on humanity that books are being written and published by people with absolutely no English or writing skills whatsoever.
You don't need to have the skill yourself... but I think Jim is on the right track in hiring someone who does.
