When using my PC (which is hardly ever) I don't open mail that has an attachment either. I have never had a problem with my Mac though, in my 6+ years on the net. When I send electronic cards, I normally send the ones that people have to go and pickup. This would remove the fear of picking up a virus.
Maybe the person will resend you thier greeting without the Attachment.
