How do I track down someones webhost

March 17 2002 at 10:52 AM

Hi,

My site has been copied almost word for word by
an annoying thieve who also boosts about doing it and stealing my products as well.

I put the stealing of products down to just a lesson
in this business and got on with life.

But now this guy has gone too far.

How do I track down his webhost so I can notify them.

I have a huge record of emails where he boosts of
his exploits so proof is not a problem.

Actually he is probably reading this as he has posted
to this board in the past.

I am going to pursue this issue all the way. If he
continues to use my website design and sales copy.

Any help from more experience peoples in this matter
will be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou
Allan Wilson

Allan, try this site:
http://ddi.digital.net/~gandalf/spamfaq.html

I didn't read the entire FAQ, but, if it's from gandalf, it'll be the one I was searching for.

It helps you identify even "spoofed" email addresses, and can help you get to the IP of the theif.

Once you've got that, you can complain to the ISP, and, if you don't get satisfaction, bump it up to the backbone provider.

Hope this helps.

There are others, including samspade.org, but once you've read this faq, you'll have some search tools.

Good luck.

Why not do the obvious first???

Just take his URL to any of the many sites that sell domain names and do a "whois" lookup - it will give you the webhost, and all the info about the domain owner.

If that doesn't work, follow Marye's advice...
