Thanks, Ken - for once again allowing us to "blow our own horns"...
Sometimes I feel like I've been on this board so long that everyone must
know who I am by now, but not everyone is clear on just what I do, so I take advantage of Ken's largesse whenever he gives us the opportunity!
I'm an ebook designer. No, no - I don't design covers
! My expertise lies on the inside
of your ebook. I create ebook interiors - page design, if you will. I can take your plain black and white pages, and, as one of my clients is fond of saying, do magic
to them. I came to ebooks by accident...
Before I came on the 'Net in the early 90's, when web pages were all grey, and there weren't even any graphics on them, I had been in publishing my entire working life (and since I'm no spring chicken, that's a long, long time!) I had been in all phases of publishing - from pasteup and layout to design to editing to actually being the publisher. In a pinch, I could even run the presses. In the 80's I was the Art Manager for a company that designed and created robotic material handling systems, and one day someone came in with a Timex Sinclair computer (and if you can remember that, you probably also remember Winky Dink!) and I was hooked on computers. I played with the Vic 20, then Commodore 64, then the original Mac, and eventually wandered into PC's. But, it wasn't until the 'Net opened up that computers became a real passion...
In 92 I decided I wanted a change from publishing, and went to Chiropractic college. While in school, I set up my first web pages, and got even more involved with computers. I had an instructor who needed a software program to run his practice and asked me to look at the ones available. I told him they were all crap, so he told me to write one. I taught myself how to program, and wrote several chiropractic-related programs. (So that's how I learned to program and eventually wrote eBook Librarian...) Also, while in school, I did a number of freelance web and graphics jobs through the 'Net ... cd tutorials for graphics programs, web pages, etc.
I had created a number of study programs using help files, and one day I decided to create my resume in help file format. Somehow I stumbled on an ebook site, and that was it. I was hooked on ebooks!
Like most of you, I read all of them I could get my hands on - and the more I read, the more I realized that they could be drastically improved. The computer gave us access to color and graphics, and even multimedia, but it was all being ignored as far as ebooks were concerned. I went on a one-man campaign to improve the quality of ebooks on the 'Net.
From that beginning, I have designed many, many ebooks for my clients, have written several ebooks myself (on ebook design, of course!), and have created a set of Word eBook Templates that make it easy for anyone to have a great looking ebook. My most recent project is something I've wanted to do for a while - it's a web hosting site for ebooks only which comes complete with built-in ClickBank and PayPal protection. Of course, more projects are on the way.
As my design business developed, I was able to create additional products and thus create multiple streams of income. This was really the turning point for me. I have never relied on being someone's affiliate - I've only ever wanted my own products, and it's working well.
I'm a good example of finding a niche- there are very few people on the 'Net doing interior ebook design...and, it's now my full-time business. I'll probably never be rich, but i'm making a living, and that's fine. This year has (so far) been very good - with a little luck and a lot of work, I'll hopefully be able to keep it that way.
So, that's my story. When you get ready to publish your ebook, give me a shout!
