Moving in on my turf: COMPETITION!

July 2 2003 at 7:41 AM
JJ

I've had virtually no competition in my market for a year.

Newbies have arrived & really made my life difficult in the last few months.

One of my competitors is becoming particularly annoying in his tactics.

I know business is business.

I'm just not accustomed to this. It's completely new to me. I need tips for:
1. battle
2. remaining sane

Help!

J.J., it is all about credibility...

You were eventually going to have competition. Some
do it because you have a great concept and it works.

They are not trying to run you out of business but...

...others just have no tact at all and do it without
any creativity. Just plain and simple copycatting.

You could get mad, try to get even but then you would
have to stoop to their level, wouldn't you.

You have loyal customers that you have grown to know
and they you, I hope.

This is better advertising than money can buy.

Strive to always make your service better and never
resort to getting even and you will grow while they
will probably wither away.

Think of it this way. Don't work your business on the
basis of competition. There is enough business for us
all.

Voice your displeasure but at all cost keep your
integrity. If this doesn't get them to change their
business ethics nothing will.

Live each day changing peoples lives for the better is
all you can do.

All the best in business.

You da Man, Mann!

Right On James Mann,

That was put so eloquently and profoundly, yet simply and down to Earth. What a way you have with taking the complex and stressful and making it all so simple and calming again.

I observe your words throughout posting all over the internet, and grow more amazed as each day passes.

Way to go, you certainly are "Da Mann!"

Competition is the spice of LIFE!

July 17 2003, 10:03 PM

J.J.

It's tough when someone comes walking down the path and then surprisingly stops to build a little shop practically right next-door, but all the great successes in life used that competition to make them even better.

Life is competition. You already know that, that's nothing new, but the fresh idea inside this paradigm is, when you read the interviews of all the Great successes in life. it was always the tough competition that drove histories superstars onto victory.

Who would Winston Churchill be without Adolph Hitler on the scene. Did the 1980's Lakers make the Celtics that much greater than they would have been? I think so!

To what degree did The Beatles fighting to be number one in the music business, succeed all the greater due to the competition of the Rolling Stones, who weren't even willing to grant the Beatles #1 seeding in Britain, let alone the world.

George Foreman and Joe Frazier made Mohammed Alli shine!

Do your thing in your unique way. Strive to be consistently reliable and you will develop many long term, mutually satisfying business relationships that will take you to the top. Be your own "STAR", the competition will only make you better.

Wishing you the best that LIFE has to offer,

concentrate on swimming not drowning

July 21 2003, 1:03 AM

It can be difficult if you have never faced competition before, but it is important that you don't let your new competitors become the focus of your attention at the cost of your customers.

I've been here too. I had a specialist publishing business with a niche market to itself - when suddenly a competitor appeared selling similar books. They even used a similar name to my own business.

I was absolutely furious. For weeks I could think of nothing else but going head to head with this competitor to prove the market was mine.

I thought of price offers. Better deals. New product lines. More advertising.

And then I realised that I was wasting my time.

So what if I drove this competitor out of town? Who's to say another one might not come along to take its place? And another one?

So instead of wastimng time on my competitors I concentrated on doing my best for my customers.

To be honest, the new competitor made me ralise I had been complacent. I was offering a good deal and good service to my customers, but I realised I should be offering a great deal and great service.

Swim with your customers don't drown with your competitors and you'll find succcess.

There really is NO competition...

July 25 2003, 8:58 AM

except with yourself.

At the risk of becoming a bit "zen" here, we only compete against ourselves.

You bring your own personality, your own skills, your own style, and your own level of committment to your site and your business. There will be those who are attracted to it, those who will be repelled. You cannot be all things to all people.

The key is to concentrate on those who like what they see and want to be a part of it.

Worry less about your competition, and more about what you're giving to your clients...
