One week test on format change

July 12 2005 at 4:11 AM

In a short while I will be starting another forum on a different topic, and I want your opinion on the format. Many discussion forums use the collapsed threaded format that is showing here now, and I want to know if you prefer it.

The collapsed vision allows for more main thread topic headers in the same space when there are a large number of posts.

However, the main advantage for the expanded thread layout - the layout that this forum had before - is that you can see the number of thread reply headers and who's posting.

What do you prefer? Collapsed, or expanded?

I will be keeping this collapsed format up for one week in order to get your response.

Thanks!
Ken Silver

Expanded (DNO)

But see, the DNO is pointless in collapsed forums. I am also forced to load each and every message - even ones I've read before - to read a new entry.

Seems to me if both Ken and Sean want...

July 13 2005, 1:10 AM

a "collapsed" forum, there's no point in even commenting on this thread any more.

And, if it's going to be collapsed, I, for one, will be looking elsewhere - I don't have the time to go through tons of collapsed threads to see what may be new and what's old. It's irritating in the Warrior forum, and will be just as irritating here.

So, it's been interesting - good luck...

See ya....

Just a test!

This is a test Neil, and the permanent outcome depends on opinion contribution. It's interesting that you prefer expanded - as I do.

It's never easy in a democrazy, is it?

No, I didn't misspell the word.

Hi Ken do you think your marketing methods could overlap into raising large finance on the web Jack

Financing

Sure Jack, if the idea had legs and they trusted me as a borrower. Marketing would have little to do with it though.

I'm cutting this exercise short...

July 14 2005, 11:31 PM

... and exercising my democrazy right to revert to expanded.

The main reason was that the posts on each thread were hidden from view. There could be fascinating subject lines there - but we wouldn't know about them unless we were attracted by the main topic.

And anyhow I like the idea of having a transparent forum with everything showing.

Thanks to all who contributed their opinion, and who 'won' or 'lost'!

Yay! One thing to keep in mind...

July 15 2005, 8:04 AM

We all get bored sometimes with the way things look to us - ie: my site looks old, my forum needs to be spiced up, etc, etc. But that's just our own familiarity with it...

That's not necessarily so for those daily, once a week, once a month, or new visitors. They may feel more comfortable with things that stay familiar... there is so much change constantly on the net that sometimes it's nice to find a familiar place.

The moral??? Well - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Glad you decided NOT to "fix it"...
