Using Free Info and software

December 13 2000 at 3:52 AM

Hi all,

I have a question for all of you "old pros" who frequent this board.

I'd like to know what rights are implied along with free information products (articles, reports, ebooks) or software applications?

Do you need to contact the owner of a free product before distributing it as a "bonus" along with paid product or posting it at a subscription-based private site?

I don't mean to be elementary with this question.
I'm just wondering what do you owe to someone whose free product adds value to your paid product.

Thanks in advance for your advice,
J. L. Mason

Copyright and freebies

Unless it is explicitly stated by the author that you have the right to freely distribute their work, either in the book or on the download page, any other distribution is an infringement of copyright.
Most of us put our own links into freebies, so from that point of view the wider it spreads the better, however you would do best to check with the author if it is not explicitly stated. Even photocopying an article from a magazine is an infringement of copyright and the author would rightly expect a royalty for the use of their intellectual property.
Heres a freebie you can redistribute:
