Password protection for downloading e-books

December 14 2000 at 4:52 AM

Can anyone suggest a good, automatic password protection tool or software to use for the downloading of PDF formatted E-Books?

Suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Is this for members to login to your site?

December 17 2000, 3:43 AM

G'day Bill,

I'm not to clear on what you want this password protection to do, is it for you to generate passwords for members to enter your site, or enter "members only" parts of your site?
No-matter, I have software by the name of Login6.2 that is easy to use, it is put out by a guy here in Australia.
I was playing with the idea of a members only section in a site and so I contacted him for further info' here is his reply:

Hi Bill,

There is no limitation to the number of members you can enter into the database, the limitation is on the processing of the members when creating a login.js listing. Here's the blurb I send most people:

The cost depends on your usage. If you want unlimited access and you use it for clients web page designs for your company, US$100. If you are only a small time user for your own web ring or special interest group, I'll give you 200 member access free provided you've some proof of your claims. If you are a small web group then 200 members should be adequate.

You may fall into a middle level group. I've received UK£30, US$40 and AU$50 for middle of the range users from 200 member access to unlimited.

Whatever the case, send me your serial number and I'll instantly reply with a registration number for 100 client access.

Direct Deposit:

I did not go down the track of a members only site and so have not used the product but I did try it out.
I found it easy to understand and use and it may fit your needs.
If you want a copy to try out, drop me a line and I'll send you what I have, (I no-longer have, or remember the URL where I found it) it will be then up to you to contact Dion and register.

Cheers.

Bill Whiteside.

Ps. The software is useless to me, you or anyone else unless it's registered, one can generate about five passwords only in this unregistered version but it lets you see what it can do.

Password Protected Directory along with Autoresponder

April 28 2007, 6:36 PM

I put my ebook in a password-protected folder/directory on my website.

My "Thank You" page directs people to go to their email to get the password for the download page.

'Don't know if you are using an autoresponder; I use AWeber.com

It takes about a minute to periodically change the password on the website folder and then change the password in the autoresponder letter.

how often do you change the p/word

Gayle

I'm still new and learning how all this works. Bear with me - there's a question at the end !

First - is this how you work it ?

1) customer buys online, by following a link on your site (and providing their email address)
2) this is managed by Clickbank or something like it
3) if - and only if - the credit card is accepted, the customer is taken to a thank-you page
4) the thank you page tells them they will soon get an email with the password
5) the AWeber auto-responder sends them the email and password
6) customer finds the download page and everyone is happy !

How does AWeber know you've got a new customer ? If it's done via the AWeber sign up form, how do you know that the transaction went OK and therefore it's OK to release the URL/password.

Do you send both the URL for the download page and the directory password in the same auto-responder message ?

How often do you change the directory password (and the cirresponding text in the AWeber message)

.... so many questions....

Hey, Snappy

I think that with e-junkie there is no need for aweber.(not for delivery of the book.)
e-junkie takes care of the whole delivery if your ebook. You just need to have a PayPal acct. And it can be a free acct.

As far as I understand (I'm new too aweber is used as an autoresponder. When you are building a list, or sending a series of marketing emails to prospects. I don't think you NEED (correct me if I'm wrong, anyone)aweber to just distribute your ebook.

Good luck with the ebook!

Aweber and E-Junkie...

June 16 2007, 9:40 PM

Aweber is not necessary to use E-Junkie, but E-Junkie has the ability to use most autoresponders to automatically your buyer's name to a mailing list. A handy feature if you are trying to build a list. If you have an autoresponder and use it with e-junkie, you can also deliver ebooks, etc through it.

They also make it easy to send someone a new link, or a free link, and edit all your items at any time. You can also have them send you a copy of the email they send to your customers.

Also, E-Junkie is not just for PayPal - you can use virtually any 3rd party processor with them like ClickBank, 2CheckOut, etc. as well as shopping carts.

They have a week free trial - if nothing else, you should sign up for a free week just to look around. Personally, I think it's a real bargain at $5...

Be careful with autoresponders on payment confirmation

March 23 2008, 6:50 AM

Many many people use these kinds of autoresponders without realizing the risks involved.

Keep in mind that email forging is so easy that I could teach a 5 years old to do it. The only way you can safely automate the transaction process is using the payment system's confirmation tools.

For example, Paypal uses IPN (instant payment notification) that send an alert to a web site. Placing rules on that site to only accept communications from the paypal site directly and validating the transaction details brings your safety up by a few hundred percents.

If you find it too complicated to implement on your own, you can either purchase a script and pay a security specialist to install and make the access rules, or you can use a simple service that deals with everything so you can just put a link on your web site for the whole transaction to be automated.

An example of such a system is Juzaz EasyPay. They offer free accounts, so there is no risk involved.

You just go to their web site, register an account, define the product, and the site generates html code to put on your site. Because of its simplicity, this works mostly everywhere online (blogs, forums, emails, myspace, web sites).

Membership CMS

March 5 2008, 5:26 PM

Hello,

I have a tool that I think will work perfectly for password protecting a members-only download area for your web site. It's called Caribou CMS (http://www.cariboucms.com) and it is a content management system - a tool that publishes content to your website. It also allows you to restrict access to certain areas/pages of your site and require user signup and/or paid subscriptions to access this content. This would let you block off an eBook download section easily. Let me know if you have any questions. Take care.

Sincerely,
Brock Ferguson
