My Vote is for Mike Breen of Staples. 3 Time LL Champ 3 Time Open Champ 81,82,83. Mike was 105-2 with both losses coming as a sophmore. Staples was only a three year high school then or he would have won it four times. CT was not in the New Englands back then either. Mike was so dominant and his victories were so decisive even in his Open matches looked boaring. His senior year he only gave up escapes even in the Open and most of them were given not earned. He had all the offensive takedowns, singles, doulbles, firemans, ducks and ankle picks. He was an excelent leg rider and pinner and always got out in seconds on the bottom.

Mike Breen's two losses

Mike Breen had only two losses. One was to Wilkes who was the open champ at 119. Mike wrestled him in the first weeks of the season and then moved down to 112 and won the open at 112. He also lost to Woods of Ridgefield in the semis of the counties but them beat Woods in the LLs a week later. Both losses were in Mikes sophmore year, he never lost again. Staples did not have freshman then. Its tough to beat three open championships.

Thanks coach, it's nice to get some input from someone who has something more to offer than the last few years. I can only go back as far as late 80's. Good to hear a name that I had not heard in a long time.

Not to detract from Breen's accomplishments, but I recall that he usually won low scoring, dull matches against the better opponents, choosing to get a lead and ride, and was never voted OW at the Open (please correct me if I'm wrong). He was definitely a Connecticut standout, but I don't know about the greatest ever.

Yes Mike was good.Best in CT ??? You say it was Staples first 3 years with a wrestling team .As good as Mike was were did he train before Staple. Was it in CT? You also said CT. was not in a new england tournament. There was a new england tour. just not sactioned by CIAC. Mike wrestled there in 83. I know because i wrestled him. In the cons. round.I believe he got 3 place. I can check my program book from that year. I think he lost first round i can not recall right now. I think at that time there were better wrestlers just at diff. weights. In 83 i wrestled mike but i also wrestled MarcAurele (Darryl). Darryl was a better wrestler (my opinion).Do you know if they wrestled? Mike was good diff. One of CT stars of the time.I love to compare
the stars of then to now. They have depth today (if you made a team)back then we had HEART. I think if we made a team from the 80's compare to today I think we would win (my opinion). Thanks to all for this web site. I wish we had this back then and good luck to all CT wrestlers from then to now and the future. It is the best sport.
