Lischke was ranked #2 Jan 6 and #1 Jan 13 at 130. He missed a few weeks of the season and was dropped from the rankings. Lischke and Gouveia wrestled the match of the tournament in the finals at 130. Lischke won OW. Gouveia won the career award, which is given each year to the senior with the best career performance over his four years. Both earned their awards coming out of the toughest weight class at SWCs. Along with Gavin Buckley, all three of these guys are potential Open semi-finalists. I know all three of these kids. They are all good kids and I wish them the best of luck at divisionals next week. |

Hate to be a homer, but:
Great tournament. Very well run.
Great job NM wrestlers. Very impressive team effort.
My thoughts for the tournament.
Great sportmanship shown by Bunnell's Wilcoxson after the 160 final-good to see after many wrestlers stormed off the mat after close losses earlier (not finals).
Also nice to see Pomperaug's head coach discuss/apologize to an opponent wrestler for some questionable elbowing to the back of the head by one of his wrestlers in a consolation final. He also had a long discussion with his wrestler-I am making assumptions about the details of both discussions.
Too many false starts-it seemed as if 1 referee just started a little slower than the rest.
Many of the finals were one-sided, but 125 and 140 looked like they could go either way. I was very surprised with Lischke @ 130 beating Gouveia. He controlled the entire match--I'd like to see a rematch (Bethel is LL-right?). I did not see the 215 or 285.
I think the SWC will be well represented at the state tournaments next week. Good luck to all!
