Well i thought about writing this and i decided its in the best interest of everyone on the site to read and respond to this. What Vernik did two years in a row now is disgraceful beyond anything Ive seen in wrestling in 20 years! He beat Abbate ( a all class wrestler) twice this year by one point. And both those times Abbate accepted it and worked hard to practice harder and use strategy to beat him if and when they faced each other again. Vernik should be disqualified from the opens because this was his 2nd time doing this - His first time we can give him a slight pass because we can pawn it off as a one time thing but not this time. I dont think Vernik has the tempermant to come back and win the opens , i would be very surprised - hes gonna probably have Clarke and Abbate to win it all! On a side note i liked Vernik for 2 years before last year against Tucker- His wrestling style leads him to be put in positions to get stuck - he rides legs awesome but all his funky rolls and stuff leave him exposed to get pined! Lets hope he shows a little class in his senior year walking off that mat for the last time win or loss because thats what he will be remembered for long after he leaves connecticut wrestling and it should be for his skill !!!

im not sure what he did way back then, I know when I wrestled we were in the same weight class and john smith was the 16 seed and vernik was the 1st and john beat him at LL's and I can only imagine he was very angry. Last year he got beat I think by tuck from danbury and he was breaking **** and slamming things. This year he stormed out of the gym barely shaking abbates hand and went out to do his own thing. Which is probably fine theres nothing wrong with being frustrated after loosing especially getting pinned in the finals but the thing that is angering most people is he couldnt not get beyond it or himself and pull it together and get his own medal and stand on the podium. Instead he had some one fetch it for him... Again like last year. Like I said if you arent man enough to go up and get your own medal and stand you should not be awarded one, in my opinion. Alot of people think its degrading to the opponent and disrespectful to the sport, team, state and so on... Just get the medal, bite your tongue and get your ass on the podium lol

honestly, there is always going to be someone who creates a scene. a few years back there was joe unger, his reactions were priceless and interestingly fun to watch. things were thrown, yelling, swearing at the ref the coaches and of course no hand-shake, thus team points were taken.
i forget if it was him or someone else, but a wrestler lost at a either his conference championship match or class match and didn't return after that even tho there was still more wrestling to be had.
i can't wait for the future flip-outs to be seen. hopefully, no-one gets hurt in the process.

Idk if anyone remembers it... but a couple years ago, like in 2006/2007 at maybe the Farmington Valley Tournament it was the 160 FINALS match. David Kerr from Fitch vs some kid from Glastonbury. In the beginning of the match the glastonbury 160's headgear kept falling off, so they taped it on nice and tight so it wouldnt fall off anymore. The match continues and almost IMMEDIATELY Kerr hits a standing headlock and throws the glastonbury kid to his back and pins him. The kid gets up and despite his own willingness, shakes Kerr's hand and STORMED off the mat. Now this is where it got funny. I guess by natural reaction, whenever this kid lost, he liked to throw his headgear...... didn't work so well this time. He fought with his headgear for about maybe 5 minutes tops, trying his damnedest to rip it off and throw it down while the ENTIRE gym was watching him... like, they didnt even start the next match until this kid finally got his headgear off and threw it in the trash can... which I found even more hilarious when I saw another wrestler walk up to the trash can, reach in, grab the headgear, laugh, and walk away with it.
By far one of the most hilarious scene's I've ever been witness to. I applaud that guy and give him a standing ovation for that skit. lol way to make himself look like a complete idiot in front of everyone watching.

I think that this shouldn't be a big deal because he lost a pretty big match. And as far as the not getting his own medal and standing on the podium who cares if he chose not to get his medal and stand on the podium? It's his choice if he wants to go on the podium and get his medal. When i wrestled Mike he was a class act.Just leave the kid alone jeez.
And to Bruno I know that kid you are talking about. He always threw his headgear no matter what win or lose.He was pissed off because there was no way he should have lost to that kid. Also, if you want to talk sh*t bout people how bout you leave your name because I'm sure he would like to know who you are.

It's a question of sportsmanship and showing respect for your opponent. I know it's tough to lose a big match, especially the way he did, and I do feel bad for the kid, but if he hasn't learned how to lose gracefully by now, his wrestling experience hasn't done him all that much good.

seriously evryone needs to stfu. OMG OMG vernik didnt stand on the podium and get his picture taken and his medal. Vernik is not the first wrestler to not stand on the podium. Yes it can be seen as disrespect. Put yourself in verniks shoes would you like to stand on the podium after getting caught when leading for the second year in a row. Everybody be quiet and save all the talk after vernik wins opens.

vernik was pissed about his match and didnt want too stand on the podium big ****ing deal .. put yourself in this cenerio... ITS YOUR SENIOR YEAR AND YOUR IN THE STATE FINALS MATCH AND YOU GOT CAUGHT you will never win a state championship and you have been wrestling since you were in 3rd grade and i kno becuase iv been wrestling with him since 3rd grade. and every time you stepped on that matt you want too be a state champ but all your hopes and dreams are ruined after you get stuck... soo all you haters worry about yourselves and if he wants too step on the podium when he wins opens then he can step on it then

I think everyone who has posted in here understands completely Verniks frustration. No one in here is saying Vernik should have never been mad. If anyone was to say that they would probably be wrong. Obviously everyone is saying the way he has reacted, AGAIN! is completely juvenile and unnecessary. You think Vernik was the only senior to loose in the finals?? How about Gouveia, how many people saw that coming, he was almost a guarantee win. Who saw swift loosing?? The kid beat the number one kid in the nation. Im sure he had it in the back of his mind he was taking it hands down. Get over yourself, the sport is way beyond just you vernik. He or anyone for that matter should not be allowed to step foot on the mat if they choose to lack sportsmanship. Show some respect for yourself, your team, your state and your opponent an get your ass on the podium. Jeez there would be no reason for this discussion. Stop trying to defend him because its impossible. This wouldn't be a big deal at all if he didn't make this such a habit. Cant wait to see his reaction when Abbate beats him in the opens.

am I high? No Im pretty sure a kid who beat costanzo for the LL championship in 07, and then was 33-0 in 08, and then 34-0 in 09 as number one seed two years in a row thought he might beat a kid who was unheard of last year.. Im not talking about what you or I think, im talking about what he probably was thinking. As with Vernik, he was upset cuz he thought he was going to win. Keep up before insulting people.

firstly, abbate did not come out of no where, he was 31-0 last year and LL champ at 30. Secondly everyone who has a backbone should go into a match thinking they are going to win, thats what make wrestling great. Third and finally THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN UPSET IN WRESTLING. it is simply the tougher, better kid winning, and how tough you really are can change in seconds

when u said and then 34-0 in 09 as number one seed two years in a row thought he might beat a kid who was unheard of last year.. i would think you meant abbate

oo no i was referring to elliot lopez as the unheard kid and gouveia is the 34 and o one i was talking about. The kid above me was saying I was high to think gouveia was thought to be a guarantee. Im sayin Vernik thought he was an guarantee then was beat and threw the fit.

kid if you knew ct wrestling youd know eliot lopez, he didnt wrestle his junior year due to personal issues but he was an animal when he did wrestle sophmore year. I personally found it funny how many kids wrote off lopez and rothberg, and to see them come through it all was great.

I've watched this message and the other one for three days and I think there are some things to be said about both of them. I now know why the National Enquirer has such a good circulation. When we comment on things without knowing all the facts it's never a good thing. It also disturbs me to see adults and coaches bash a 17 or 18 year old kid on a public forum. dnowa, there's a big difference between mooning someone and leaving the gym after a loss that upsets a wrestler. I have seen no posts referring to the fact that Abbate pushed Vernik while he was standing in the introduction line at the SCC's. I saw it, as did many of the wrestlers that were standing there. Vernik kept his cool and did not react to this display of bad sportsmanship. I would bet this had at least something to do with the way Vernik reacted at the LL's.
Yes, he did leave the gym, but he did it in a calm way(considering what had just happened). I did see him come back into the gym and join his teammates in the bleachers. I have been to many matches and this is not the first time I have seen a wrestler miss the medal awards. I don't understand why everyone continues to bash this kid instesd of posting about the important things that happened last weekend. I have seen very few posts about all the good matches that must have occurred this weekend. Lastly, I would say that until you are perfect(I don't think there have been any such posters as I haven't seen any signed JC or GOD), I think we should all refrain from throwing stones.

I watched the video, and really thought that everyone acted fine. What happened out of the gym, doesn't have anything to do with sportsmanship, he showed good sportsmanship on the mat, and that is what matters. I do think that he should have been on the stand though. Sometimes even the best get stuck, it's nothing more, nothing personal. @@it happends. It really does seem like the bashing out weights the video.

lol its funny how everyone keeps saying he kept his cool and **** because no one cares!! We are talking about his unsportsmanlike decision to not stand on the podium again! And last year his unsportsmanlike to break stuff. I think we can all agree he left the gym without a problem. It was his choice after that pisses everyone off. Everyone thinks it should be his decision to stand but it really shouldn't be and his parents or coach or tournament director should have told him get over yourself get your ass up there or leave medal less. lol watch another comment saying vernik wasn't bad at all he left the gym with no problem lol

I was referencing the post by the person who said that you should be able to do anything you want. Of course there is a huge difference between those actions, and I was more troubled by the comment about being able to do whatever you want than I was by the actions of the wrestler in question.

and seņor meathead... I've seen kids lose tougher losses in more important tournaments than the class tournament and STILL have more class than storming off and breaking things, or refusing to stand on the podium and get their own medal. It's disrespectful to not only the one wrestler he wrestled in the finals but everyone else who was on that podium as well as everyone who WASN'T on the podium because everyone would've died to have that medal. To anyone who says Abbate pushed Vernik before the match... that may be the case, and I can understand more clearly why Vernik reacted the way he did... but sometimes you just gotta suck it up and be the bigger man. I hope for his reputation's sake that Vernik shows more class next week at Opens... And as for your friend who always threw his headgear win or lose........ I don't even have a response to that... thats just PATHETIC

evrybody stfu this is done and over with. This " incident " was made into such a big ordeal when it didn't need to be. This was the second year vernik got caught like that when leading and winning the LL's would have meant alot to him. Maybe he didn't handle it the best way by not showing up on the podium but its even more immature of you guys for bitching like little girls on pintowin still days after it happened. evrybody save all the talk till after vernik wins his state open championship.

Vernik Should have stood on the podium. It takes no class to win and get respect but its takes a lot of class to lose with respect. Im not coming on here to bash him but I think he should have at least apologized to the rest of the 140 placers at LLs. just like Ford did at Ms. Im not asking him to post it on this forum but at opens he should.

How easy is it to WIN and show your opponents respect? EASY
How easy is it to LOSE and show your opponents the same amount of respect as if you won? NOT SO EASY
It takes a real man to lose and keep his chin up.
Taken from the lips of the Great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself

NOTHING anyone says or does will excuse the behavior of Mike Vernik and you are a fool if you are still trying to defend him. His impression has been made... TWICE.

"I don't know whos a bigger tool....BrunosBoy or nolimit. Unreal!!!!"
Suckback, it's you. Unlike Brunosboy and nolimit, you have no concept of sportsmanship and the ultimate reasons for participating in high school athletics. If it's only about winning, you're wasting your time.
