Killingly, Conn. —
State wrestling champion David Loomis ruled the mats at Killingly High School for years until his graduation in 2006.

Loomis, now heavyweight champion with Northeast Championship Wrestling, returns to his school Saturday to perform professionally, part of a fundraising event.

The show will also feature Killingly natives Matt Kazer and Dale Trehar, along with a host of other league wrestlers.

Loomis said he has issued an “open challenge” to the other competitors.

“It’s a challenge open to anyone that thinks they can take the belt away from me,” Loomis said.

Loomis said the wrestling he engages in now is of the television variety, rather than the high school version of the sport, but still described Saturday’s show as family-oriented. He said it will include opportunities for children to meet, take pictures with and receive autographs from the wrestlers.

Susan Griffiths, a teacher at Killingly High School and a class adviser for the junior class, said Loomis approached her about holding the show to benefit the class.

“I think it’s kind of nice for him to come back and take part in this type of event,” Griffiths said.

Griffiths said proceeds from the show will go into the general fund for the class of 2010, which is used to offset the cost of the prom, graduation and other class events.
