This is not my data but a quote from a serious and reputable work done by the Russian military, titled: “ANALYSIS OF COMBAT EMPLOYMENT OF RECONESSANCE TROOPS IN THE CHECHANIAN CONFLICT”.
I realize that the first figure should probably include wounded too ohterwise they just don't add up.
In other words it should read:
Just on the new year’s day (that is the first day of the assault) the Federal army lost a total of 1,500 soldiers killed, wounded and missing.
The 131 Maikop Brigade lost 20 out of 26 tanks, and around 100 APCs our of 120. As of February 9, some 120 members of the Brigade were listed as missing.
Grozny was finally taken by the end of February. The assault lasted nearly 2 months. In two months the Russian Army lost 1,426 killed and missing and 4630 wounded and 96 were captured by Chechens.
So the total losses in two months amounted to some 6,000.
A large percentage of losses were due to friendly fire of aircraft, artillery and inexperienced infantery.
