They fired everything possible on they attack run.
There might be a question if they fired MG's ONLY: The answer still yes. In some cases where ground troops specificaly requested IL2's to loiter over battlfield to supress enemy infantry during attack they sure fired MG's only after spending all cannon and rocket ammo.
Btw, MG's with they high rate of fire is more effective against infantry then low-caliber cannons.
