...if "the west" chooses to cast its attempt to influence the Ukrainian vote as a crusade against Russia. I can't recall a single article in western press where Yanukovich is described as a Ukrainian political force, without the adjective "pro-Russian", without mentioning the support he received from Putin, etc, etc. In all fairness, it was never denied that Yuschenko received western support. But that actually corresponds to reality, which is not the case with alleged Yanukovich's "pro-Russianness".

This is doubly insulting for Ukrainians: not only is there interference in internal Ukrainian affairs, but the reason for the interference is not even Ukraine itself, but the struggle against Russia. If Ukraine did not have a border with Russia, no one would've even cared about the outcome of this election.
