Response to Russians cannot be blamed...

"A more correct way to put it is they are trying to tip the scale in favor of Yuschenko. Which backfired, since for historical reasons many Ukrainians are allergic their former colonial masters the Poles."

It is true that the history Polish-Ukrainian was't exactly happy, but still your thesis about Ukrainians disliking Poles is mostly wrong.

Why?

One of the reasons is that Ukraine had not one but three colonial masters: Poles,Austrians and Russians(Soviets). And of these three, the Poles were in the middle in terms of cruelty and opression, with Austrians being the most gentle and Russians being the cruelest.

This makes the memory of much stronger Russian opression (like the Great Famine)make the Ukrainians largely not care so much about the roughly non-existent Austrian opression and the moderate Polish opression.

Also, of all of Ukraine's neighbours, Poland is the one with the best standart of living and the biggest prosperity of the people. This makes Ukrainians attracted to Poland as a economically succesfull country and makes them respect us and see us as a nation they actually want to have something to do with.

Third, Poland has been quite active in supporting Ukraine politically- for example,AFAR, Poland was the first country to recognize Ukraine's sovereignity and it is consistently supporting democracy in Ukraine and generally conducting a active friendly foreign policy in Ukraine.

Especially in these times of struggle in Ukraine, the voice of Poland is loud and full of consistence with it's former actions in the last decades and it is the voice of a friendly, rich, democratic country which wants Ukraine to be a democratic country too.

Does these things together make Ukrainians 'allergic' to Poles? Do you think they hate their richest,(probably)the most democratic neighbour who is supporting democracy in their country?
Of course not, quite the contrary- Polish politicians and artists who are visiting Ukraine right now in support of democracy are often greeted with Polish flags and shouting "Poland! Poland!".
On the internet, you can see Ukrainians from the diaspora sharing similiar sentiments about Poland.

"Incidentally, only an idiot would think that Yanukovich is "pro-Russian"."

Well, he was openly supported by Putin himself, which is the definitive proof of being supported by Kremlin, he is "Kremlin supported" or "Putin's candidate" for sure.

"And I really fail to see what Putin has to do with both sides' voting irregularities."

What are the 'both sides' voting irregularities? What where the Yushchenko's side irregularities?

Yes, it is Yanukovych who is responsible for the immense cheating and falsifying that was done in his favour, not Putin.

OTOH, what is Putin responsible for? Putin is responsible for supporting a criminal politician who totally falsified the elections.

the majority of Ukrainians voted on the other candidate, who is being of accused by Russians of being the "Polish candidate" or "American candidate".
