I purchased Ad-Aware plus a few years back because Gater had been loaded onto my computer without my knowledge. Gater came as a silent gift with RealOne Media Player, of all things, and I needed to extract it (uninstalling Gater doesn't uninstall the spyware that comes with it, sneakily enough).
So now I run Ad-Aware every so often, looking to see if any spyware has snuck onto my computer. About three or four times a year it finds something, and I can only assume that it's coming from pop-up ads because I simply don't download that much from the web (I'm basically a very insecure person - virus scans every day, always virus scan a disc before I use it, don't go to porno sites, that sort of thing). Anyhow, I know my computer was clean before, and Ad-Aware spotted junk after, so I'm blaming the malicious pop=up.
