I have a 1.8L dohc engine in a rabbit, and I want to make as much power as I can and still stay on the street. Right now the motor is all stock. Can it handle 11:1? what are my boundaries? I want it naturally aspirated going 12's on the street, I could settle for low 13's on the street and high 12's at the track. Is my goal realistic? send me some feedback on my email or post something.

I was told by someone who responded to my post if I do a full rebuild, run high comp. domed pistons, fully ported head, cams, springs, valves, ect. I would be lucky to go high thirteens! Is that true?! Any one out there with an all motor 16V let me know what kind of power you are making and what 1/4 mi. times. If what I heard is true I just lost a whole lot of faith in my little Gti. As always, any feedback is appreciated. I didn't want to offend anyone with the tittle but I NEED some answers cause I am gonna rebuild my motor soon. Thanx

i've heard of a scirocco I go 13.8 all motor, looked street driven, apart from that, only ABD's pickup has a faster 16v time than the rocco at 12.6 IIRC, cis sucks, tuning is gonna suck too, i went 15.2 on a stock 1.8 16v rabbit that could barely start because of low compression, the car was fun but wasn't fast by any means.

A1 VW's are not slow. They're not "fast" either. They're quick.

You're not going to outrun a Supra on the freeway, but you might beat him 0-60.

That being said, what is your obsession with being N/A? You're just going down a path of frustration to try and get an N/A street car to go high 12's on the track. With a 4 relatively old technology 4 cylinder, that's asking a LOT.
Not to say you couldn't do it, but you'd be wasting a lot of money. I would go turbo, but if you're dead-set against it..

IMHO, spend a bit of money on the rebuild, p&p, mild cams, bump compression, ARP everything, lighten and balance everything. But don't go crazy. you don't need a $2000 knife-edged custom crank. Then lighten the car as much as possible. Lexan windows, remove the door beams, gut the interior, remove the bumpers, cut out sheel metal and cover with aluminum plates, etc. Get a Quaife, and you'll have one fucking QUICK Rabbit. This is just what I would do though.

How are the SMOG laws where you live?

Here in CA they're very tough so I have to be careful with everything I do.

VW's can help themselves pretty decently. To get high hp on an all motor car, more than likely you will need to spend some decent money. then you are pretty much stuck at that level.
For the same money you could put on a turbo system & have even more hp. the thing with a turbo system is that you can have 180hp today & 240hp tomorrow, Just by adjusting the boost.
However, I have seen some healthy 2.0 16v's give the mustang 5.slow a beating, na. Anyway do you homework add up the cost & compare the figures & see Which is best.

on a 1.8 16v shortblock, mildly ported 8v head(giving 13 or 14:1, race gas only), big cam and dual carbs. Carefully built but streetable 2.0 16v can run high 13s, but it's alot of money. OTOH, running 12s is alot of $ no matter how you go about it. Some paths are cheaper than others, but none of them are cheap.

Keep in mind that a 13 second rabbit is 4 seconds faster than a stock rabbit. Relatively, it's fast. Maybe not compared to overcooked rice, but it's fast. And it'll beat alot of V8s at the strip. Not all, but alot.
