Hi guys, I'm kinda new here. And what I am about to type is dead serious, so please don't flame me. I am running a Golf on a 1/4 mile paved oval track and have a 1.8 bored to 83mm with a Weber DFEV carb. I have a header and a .465" crane cam. The problem is that I shattered a lifter bucked at 7700 rpm. The top of the bucket broke off of the skirt and damaged the lifter bore. I am wondering what I can do to prevent this from happening again. The cam RPM range goes to 8400 rpm but due to the size of the track and gearing, I am sure I will never get that high. I am looking for a durable 8000. I am using the '83-84 GTI solid lifter heads. The compression is 14.2:1 with Wiesco pistons with +.015" deck height and 30.5 cc chambers.

I look forward to hearing what you guys have to say as I am very new to VW. I have raced a Mustang with a 2.3 for 4 years in this class, but the Golf can easily outhandle it. And I wanted something different.

Thank you for your time and replies,
Scott

I know lots of road racers bore the heads out and fit larger Alfa lifters in and then use lash caps to adjust the valves. Not sure on the specs, but something to check into.

Take a hydraulic lifter from a Golf and press the hyd section out in a hyd press(you will have to dremel some of the other shit out as well). Then put a lash cap under it.

The alfa buckets are larger dia. and would work better, but they are also more$$.

When you get it all straightened out make sure to use stiffer valve springs. that can take the revving much more than stock springs.

Thanks for your ideas guys, I had another head built for this weekend and it performed flawlessly at 7800 rpm. I am running the Crane Cams dual springs that they recommend with this cam.

Thank you very much for your replies,
Scott
