In Yerp we have 2 types of inlet manifolds available for the Golf 1800 16v GTI engine. These are refered to as small and thick pipe. Internals of a thick pipe inlet manifold are larger in diameter although as I understand it the interface to the head is the same area.
So I'm wondering what are the gains as I've heard I NEED a thick pipe inlet manifold. I know a bit about tuned inlet tracts but all I can make out as that the volume of air in the thick pipe manifold will be greater. Will I have more torque at certain revs? I'm fairly sure it's not just the thick pipe but also some kind of different ignition map that goes with it or another cam. I need the full story before I undo VW's good work.
More questions to follow but in the meantime thanks.
