I just read a post from Mountain Man in West Virginia and thought to myself, "Wonder how many States and countries are represented here on the forums?"
This is interesting to me. When I was a teenager, I spent alot of time on shortwave radio, trying to log all of the continents, countries and states of the world. I know that many carvers are to busy to check out the forums right now, but I thought that I would start something that could be brought up from time to time. I know this info is available on the profile page, individually, and on posts, individually. It just seemed kind of cool to me to read through alot of responses from alot of different places. This info might be worth setting up a link called something like, "Where I'm From".
So, here it is.
Tell us where you are from.
I'll be first.

Any chance you carve near Emmaus or that you know of someone in the area interested in helping with an open house display. It is a wood working shop and I thought it would be interesting to have someone there. Thanks,
tina.
Hi. My name is Bob Dorton, and I am representing the Cameron chamber of coommerce 4 of July commitee. We were interested in maybe hiring a treecarver to entertain the public for a few hours. I spent a lot of my childhood time in Springdale Kansas during the '50s/'60's/70's. My grandfather's farm is still there that we own. And unfortunately, my Uncle still lives there on "the lower 80". I am not necessarily a wood carver per se, but I do wood carving on gourds and wood burning when I get the chance.
Drove through the area not too long ago and it hasn't changed all the much. A lot of the old folks' houses are gone now and it is kind of sad to think of them.
We just lost a huge cottonwood--at one time billed as the largest cottonwood in Kansas. It is badly hollowed but I am trying to find some way to save some parts for posterity. We are in Marshall co. about 12 miles S. of Marysville and 45 miles north of Manhattan. Would you be interested in a job carving?
Hi,.. I am going to start chainsaw carving in the next week or two. I also live in Texas. Originally from Houston, but now live in the Panhandle of Texas. I had trouble finding any chainsaw carving instructional class here. Only found one in Wisconsin. So, I have decided to teach myself. I did order a video.
Can you give me any advice?
We have 60 wooded acres in Colorado and I have brought back two pine logs to start my beginning projects with. I plan to market my bear carvings in New Mexico and Colorado.
I am about 25 miles from the St Lawrence River, and about the same distance from Lake Ontario and the Adirondack Mntns. About 100 miles from Tupper Lake.
Just got back on-line after comp virus and other problems. Nice to be home again. Gary K Smith
I have been carving with a chain saw for about 8 years. I really enjoy it and have a plan to do more as I get older. I am starting a store on a main route in the city of Geneva. I am going to show and sell carvings as well as general gift items. I want to know if this interests you.
I'm looking for someone to do some tree carving in west central Illinois. Please respond to the email address above if you know of anyone in Illinois/Iowa/Missouri that has tree carving experience and would like to do some work at a local park district.
HI
I was just checking to see if you found your carver. I do not live close put I do travel. If you have time look at my web( woodbcreations.com ). If you need someone let me know!

This is amazing to me.
I know that the forums are slow right now but we have just heard from 15 states and 3 countries.
Duane Bender tells us that he has logged 30 states and 8 countries.
I wish I had thought of writing it down as it appears, but didn't have the forsight. Thanks Duane.
I know that there are other states and countries being repesented here. Many of you are my online friends. So I am going to do this again and again. Just so everyone of us gets a feel for how big this thing is.
This page is about to pass into the history of the the forums, but in the meanwhile, we have heard from 15 states and 3 countries in one day.
Whoa!!!
Joe Bolf
ps: Robin, I gave up shortwave radio years ago to my great regret.
Tim, It is a very small world and getting smaller all of the time. Imagine, someone from your state having been in my shop.
To those of you who thought Of me as Brain Dead, You know who you are, "Dave", I just thought it might be fun.

Hi Bill,
I was curious if you are still carving and in what area. I am in Harford County Maryland and am looking for someone to carve a large maple that I would like to take down but create a carving from the main trunk.
Would you know of anyone in this area or could you give me an idea of what prices I could expect from this type of project?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John

I'm from just outside Ewen, a small village outside of Cirencester, which is a Roman town (Corrinium - Capital of the Cotswolds),in Gloucestershire, England, UK.
I started chainsaw carving 2 years ago. With each project, I'm more and more addicted. I was featured in our local(Cambridge,Ohio)paper the same day we brought our new daughter home from the hospital. I enjoy most doing carvings along old gravel roads. Unfortunatly, most of them have been stolen. A compliment to me I guess. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you. Have enjoyed this web site very much, finally, people like me. So far this year I've carved a horse head,7'Indian,13'lighthouse,a 9'Trojan for the local school, and too many to mention. Am looking for other carvers to share experiences with.
i'm just starting to carve. Maybe made
15 or 16 carvings. sold a few to friends,
but mostly just gifts. not really sure
how to sell them or if they are good enough
to be selling them really. i live just outside
of wasilla, alaska. thats about an hour from
anchorage. don't honestly know what i'm doing
and most my stuff has cracks but i'm getting
better and i really enjoy carving with the
chainsaw. i'd like to join this forum if that
is okay and listen in on what others have to say
(seems like everyone knows a lot here) though i
dont really have the experience to add much yet.
i dont know anyone who carves with chainsaws or
anything else for that matter. you all are the
first group of people that are into it that i've
found. i plan to read all the postings available.

Hi, started chainsaw carving 3 months ago. Gary Smith introduced me to the forum...thanks Gary. The information, ideas and inspiration is GREAT! Especially enjoy seeing pix of carvings.
Hey Joe,
Sometimes I wonder where I am from. It seems that the world has become my home and I am at home wherever I am. It is an honor to say that I am from the rendezvous capitol of the world, Ridgway,Pa.
Hi Im julie from Australia. I live in a small town in Victoria called Wangaratta. I have only just started carving recently. Andy Hancock from Wales came to visit his sister here and saw some of my paintings and told me anything I can paint I can carve. Guess what he was right. Im not so sure about the computer thing though its a hell of a lot more dangerous than the saw or arbotech. I only just learnt on it this week when it turned up. I hope you get this message O.K. bye Julie
Hey Julie,
I tried to email you but the address didn't work.
So I'm posting it here.
Also congratulations to Baer, for being the 70th response.
So far, we have 62 carvers, from 28 states and 5 countries. Duane Bender has logged 126 carvers, in 34 states and 8 countries. I'd like to see everyone on one post. We are getting close. Thanks Pappa Joe for listing this post on the top of the forum page. Great Fun, isn't it.
Hi Julie,
I just wanted to thank you for responding to my post "Where Are You From?",
on the Carving Post.
You are the first to respond from Australia.
Thanks for adding another continent to our list.
There is another lady carver from Australia, who visits the forum, but she hasn't responded to this post. Her name is Angie. If you don't know her,
keep an eye out. She is a fine carver and maybe the two of you could meet.
Thank you again.

Long Island,New York (Brentwood to be specific, suburbia)... about 60 minutes to wine country, 1 1/2 hours to the rich and famous Hamptons, a ferry ride to the diverse and wide open communities of Fire Island and it's simple beach life ( no cars... bikes, red rider wagons and water taxis are the order of the day there - bring a good book, your swimsuit and an appetite for fun - and lots of money - it's expensive!), about 20 minutes from the Gold Coast of Long Island where the rich and famous used to build there mansion in the early 1900's and finally - 25 - 30 miles or 2 hours in rush hour traffic (or a 1 hour train ride) to Manhattan ( far enough away to be safe, close enough to watch from the beaches in horror as the billowing smoke from the Tower Tragedy changed all of our landscapes forever - we were all New Yorkers that Day - It made those of who take it for granted remember that we are Americans - it's a terrible price - Never Forget!)
Hi Joe,
I'm an Aussie carving chick from the big smoke we call Melbourne on a good day, and Smellbourne the rest of the time. I carve in a big old warehouse in an industrial estate 5 minutes from Melbourne City. It is an interesting place with 25 artists all working in the same enormous space. Lots of strong personalities and lots of interesting times. Although, on the whole, we all get along quite well (though I'm a bit noisy). I'm not the only chainsaw carver in our warehouse, there is another called Christian Patton and at one stage there were 4. I know of at least 50 chainsaw carvers in Australia and counting. Happy Christmas and stay well.
Boy, I guess I'm late on this one, must be missed it the first time around.
We are from Montour Falls, NY, the Finger Lakes region, best know for the Nascar circuit in our county and historical road racing.
Hi Im Kevin from Australia I Live in North East Victoria in a town named Beechworth it is about 25 miles from Wangaratta and I know Julie. I am going to try to make it to Ridgway in Feb. I hope to meet you all there. Best Wishes to you all from Kevin.

I got started carving when I was about seventeen and carved a little bit every now and then. I liked making things out of wood and also loved the smell of it. I met Don who got me interested in chainsaw carving. I made little things out of wood but was still learning. Then I went to Ridgeway as a novice and was blown away as a carver. All the carvings and styles of carvings amazed me. When I got home I was all pumped up with a renewed hope with chainsaw carving. This minute I can say that with in one year I have become a better carver. The most important thing I have to remember is to stay humble and never get cocky. See Yah Joe and George!!
My friends and I are very glad that see all of you from all of the world in Ridgway again.
We are so exciting!!
I would like to introduce our Japanese carvers.

I sold my home in Riverside Calif.this spring and now I use Bartlett Tenn. for my legal home, but I live in a 36' gooseneck horse trailer with living quarters and my home is truly the U.S.A. For the last 4 months I have been in the Smoky Mountains of Tenn. Next will be 10 days near Greensboro N.C., then Ridgway Penn. and then down to Daytona to defrost for bike week. Probably more than you wanted to know. It depends where I am invited to go, where it is posted not to go and where I have been kicked out of.
Hello everybody.
I just saw this site and all these messages from people allover, great. I make my living doing woodsculptures with chainsaws, and did treesurgery for about 25 years. In Denmark you dont find that many people doing sculptures with chainsaw, and my kalender is full and its been like that for some years. I allways did kreative modeling, drawing or cutting,..like the rets of you I surpose. I have been working on some Symposiums round the world with my wife and thats a great oppetunity to meat nice people. In June I go to climb some 110 m redwoods in California. Are there any good surgetions on some great woodsculptures to see? In Cal. I mean.
You are very welcome to viste www.skulpturvaerkstedet.dk

I am from Lucas,Ohio. I was born in Indiana, but I don't remember any of that. I have been carving two years, full time. I don't have another job at this time. I hope to open a business involving carvers.
Before I started carving, I went to school in Janesville Wisconsin to become a taxidermist. I opened my own business in 1981 and ran it for 18 years. I closed it out in 1998,due to my husband didn't like me to spend the time. He was then killed in 1999,a car/motercycle accident. I couldn't go back into it, there was too much feelings there. He would never let me help cut firewood with a chainsaw. I said for five years that I was going to carve the stump in the back yard, So by the time I learned how to use one ,I ended up carving the rotton thing into a bear, that is still standing. Once in my blood, there's no stopping me. I love it and carve every day. Thanks Freida

I'm in the Bronx, N.Y.C.,
My shop, and home is five hours away, I'm carving any where I can between Ithaca, N.Y., and the Bronx,N.Y., I should write a book about this, called;"Starting Out, Falling in Love, THe double life of Dedicated Carvers, and Devoted Boyfriends" ::::I've met a lot of guys like My self, Who come to the City for their girl friends.I fell in love with Ridgway, just after I met Her, now, I need to figure out how to balance the two,(a life in a cramped, city of 8 million, with almosty no where to carve, and a life in a huge studio, five hours North, with a really crappy job market) and strangely enough, making the most "irrational decisions", is seeming to be the way to fly right now.Hope to see You at Ridgeway!
My heart is in Minneapolis but I live in St. Paul,MN. That's local humor about the Twin Cities. I lived in Minneapolis for years. I also had a brief stint in Portland and Eugene, OR., with a pair of ladies. I was slightly younger, wilder and freer. It was truly miserable. Hee hee
Currently a resident of Rocky Mount, NC, ENE of Raleigh. Father of Kevin of Nashville, NC. Have never completed a chain saw piece but have done many hand carvings for BSA, mostly beaver neckerchief slides for Scouts. (Thus Beaverslide) Never sold a piece. Very interested in chain saw art because of Kevin's interest. Kevin just started last spring and has made and sold many fine pieces, he even made the front page a couple of times in the local papers.
Just a mention, if he has something to say about wood, listen closely. He has an amazing knowledge about plants in general and wood in particular.
Looking forward to the vous, hope to see ya'll there.

My 12 year old son and I are from Colorado but we like the great northwest and now reside on the side of Mount Baker Washington until we decide to find new wood. We both started carving a little over a year ago,the seed was planted by Dave Tremco and continues to grow from inspiration from names like McVay,Backus,King,Sharp,Higgins,Angie,Jesse, and all of the others that think I forgot their names,I didnt, I just hate typing. I am a chainsaw carver and I live in Walton, New York. It is in the central part of the state. The name of my shop is "Bear Ridge Chainsaw Carvings". Hi to all! - Fred
I recently gave up an engineering career (in Boise, ID) to pursue an fine arts degree in sculpture. Since receiving this education, I have taken up sculpting wood using the chainsaw as the initial, and generally, the major tool. My biggest issue is finding a permanent location for producing my sculptures using the chainsaw due to the obvious noise issue. Any ideas???

I am from Eastern CT in a town by the name of Canterbury. I am in close proximity to both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun Casinos. If there are any local Carvers who would be interested in letting me watch them work and or show me a thing or two I would be interested. Heck I would even be willing to spend some money for some formal instruction.

Hi everyone,
Just stumbled across site a few hours ago the boys hav'nt been fed yet and its now 8pm. Great site, just love it. Got the chainsaw carving bug from watching Angie at several country shows, her work is just fantastic. Ken works in metal, (garden sculptures) and does a little carving. I work in wood, craft Australian Bush Art Furniture (rustic) and natural form sculpture incorporating Australian opal inlay. We have 4 chainsaws Papa Bear, Momma Bear and 'twins' Baby Bear 1 & 2. Have just ordered a 'newborn' small carving saw, we can't wait to get our hands on it. A little about where we are from: A little town called Torrumbarry some 2.5 hours drive north of Melbourne. Torrumbarry consists of an Aussie Pub, Roadhouse and Hall with residents spread out in surrounding dairy farm land. We are a little different, our farm on the banks of the beautiful Murray River grows wine grapes and we make wine. The property has 100 year old plus Murray River Red Gum and Box trees - very very hard wood. We have a resident 'mob' of kangaroos and wallabies come out of the bush each evening and graze on our green vegie block and pool area. There are also 6 pairs of very noisy kookaburras around the house and hundreds of cockatoos. Cockatoos are known as feathered chainsaws they chew through the thickest of branches and destroy the upper canopy of gum trees. Torrumbarry is a tourist haven for water sport lovers, has great inland fishing, camping, and the coldest beer at the pub. Needs to be cold our temps get above 40 degrees (celsius) Would love to hear from any
'old' masters or new commers to the craft. Happy carving to all. Ken and Gabrielle

now, was born & raised in Alaska. I'm pretty new on here, but I've been lurkin since July ( Dick Tilley has christened me sir lurkalott, I'll take what I can git) I've been carvin in some form or other since I was 12 yrs old, and have done a lot of commercial work on mantle-pieces, armoires, tables, and the like. Eventually, though, they promoted me to HR, which I did for 5 yrs till I had a belly-full. Now I'm on my first year as a chainsaw carver, can't quite claim sculptor yet, we'll see after I finish up some stuff for our local zoo, might get enough practice on something other than wholesale stuff to feel more artistic. It pays the bills though, & I'm not complaining - Still can't believe some days that I'm self-employed and not workin' for -The Man- anymore. Sure feels good to be able to make an income doin what comes natural, it's a real blessing. The difference between sittin in an office half asleep countin down the minutes compared to bein outside workin up a sweat with a good piece of wood and a chainsaw is night and day!
Morrisonville,New York. Upstate,N.Y.,Vermont,Canadien border. Lake Champlain area. You guys and ladies have inspired me. I've been chainsaw carving about 1 year.
Thank You,

I have been at it little over three years, I'm slow and breathless but I really enjoy making the chips fly. Glad to read you all on the forum that Joe has let me join. Be safe all of you. Bubs

Mostly from every where. Never lived more then two years in one house, don't ask me why, I guess my parents liked the excitement of it all. I was born in San Diego, CA and like I said moved, I have moved More times then I can count but the average is about every two years. Moved from CA to TX,UT,OR now back in San Diego I'm actually surprised, I've been living here a yaer and a half and haven't moved yet and hoping it will stay that way. Carving takes a lot of traveling so we're getting along just fine. I got introduced to carving by my good friend Steven Higgins, he's a unique character and a great guy those of you that have met him know what I'm talking about. I don't know to many of you but I'm sure we'll cross line's some day and I'm looking forward to it. Angela Markwick
My name is Gav Thorpe and I'm from Sussex, England.
As far as carving goes, I'm the new guy. I discovered chainsaw carving not long ago and have just started it myself. I hope to one day be a full-time carver and known as a professional chainsaw carver.
I live in Tomahawk Wi. I sarted carving in a tent in back of my wife's gift shop. I was carving in 0 degree wheather and everyone thought I was nuts. I was addicted. I learned everything I know the hard way. I didn't know anyone to talk to about carving or about forums. I have learned a great deal from the websites and other people sharing. It's been 4 years now and I don't regret one minute of it. I take my hat off to people like Joe Bolf so that others communicate better.
I'm from Gatlinburg, Tenn. Every tree you can think of grows here and some you've never heard of. In the heart of the Smoky Mountains. I've been carving 34 years.
I am from Pine River, MN...previously Winona, MN
I have been carving for one year now. I have only finished two carvings due to Lymes disease. I will start carving again soon.
I watched and helped my dad (Chainsaw)Willy Loper for almost 7 years before I started myself. Been chainsaw carving for about 8 months all together off and on. I'm starting to get the "fever" as I'm sure you all know about. Went to my first carving event in Scandia, PA. Had a great first experience. Met alot of great carvers, and also competed with my dad. Everyone was real encouraging and easy to get along with. Dad got third in over-all and second in the tag team quick carve.
Happy Carving everyone!
Matt Loper

I hope someone in my area can help me. I live in West Bend Wisconsin and I have been commissioned to do three large carvings for a local church. The logs I am looking for should be at least 24" wide and 5' high. I need them to be fairly dry ,Hopefully a butternut (I like the grain)as these will have a natural finish. But will consider any other suggestions from anyone who has done fine finished carvings. I appreciate this forum and suggestions.
Thanks so much, Tom Weiss

I miss you all, well most of you anyway. :^) .
Looking foreward to seeing you again,
as well as meeting the rest of you.
I'm from Lake Winola (Northeastern) Pennsylvania. As an optician I make and service eyeglasses all day long and when I get home I try to leave all my frustrations aside when I pull the saw starter rope ......Therefore the name "The Sawptician" I've been relief carving for about 16 years as a hobby. Started tinkering with chainsaw carving about 3 years ago after getting sidetracked while cutting wood for my outdoor furnace.
West Fargo, ND!!!! I'm new to the chainsaw carving world having started this August. I'm looking forward to learning from the cumulative experience of everyone on this site.
