I used a 10" diameter black walnut log for a brown trout. Fins are a bit too small (or my trout too plump , but this is how I use my narrow logs.
I always sand the fish and leave the background rough.

Cheryl, How is your back/spine holding up now that you have started carving again?

Very well so far, Ken, thanks for asking. I just got back from a brutal harvest in Missouri and my back is great, thank goodness. My right shoulder is killing me (I had to lift 320 40 pound bags to shoulder height), but I'm thankful I can start working with smaller carvings again.
