My stihl 180 stopped oiling a few weeks ago so I stripped the whole thing as far as I could, proded it with wire and flushed the tank with petrol. When I put it back together the blockage had cleared but now there seams to be too much oil. It doesn't have an adjuster! I can only think I've burst through an internal filter and there's less resistance for the oil to flow. The only benefit is I don't need to put timber preserve on beause they are practicaly soaked in oil. Any Ideas?
I'm coming in a bit late on this one Johnny you may have moved on but anyway lets see
As far as I know there is only the tank pickup pipe that has a filter on it assuming that is still attached.
Are you using a good chain bar oil? and not going for ordinary engine oil which can be too thin hence the spraying on of oil especially in this hot wheather just now.
If you are running a short carving bar on the 180 it do'es tend to pour more oil out
Dave
Yes it's good oil. Another well known brand (Dare I say it, Husky!)I pulled the fillter off when I stripped the thing but it's deffinately back on. Yes it's got a 12 inch Stihl carving bar and chain. I know they'r not popular but that's what I've got just now. Insidentaly the chain locked up tight tonight and I've had to change it for a new one. Well I can't say it's because it's not getting enough oil! I ran it in a bit and even with a new chain the bar was heating up rapidly and burning the oil. I didn't carve again though so I don't know if it's as bad as before. I must say I'm being tempted by a 192 but can't spare the cash yet.
There's not too much wrong with a Stihl carver if your only hobbying and part timeing
A 12" bar on a 180 will slosh plenty of oil about I got a 12" GB and that do'es the same
Without seeing how much oil is gushing out dare I say if you have only been used to crosscutting and felling then you may find that carver bars dont do heavy work and therefore the oil dos'nt get taken away with the sawdust.
As for the chain locking up I think maybe you are running it way to tight
the chain needs to hang on the bar, the drive links should be visable below the bottom rail. Also I might add if you have still got oil in the tank when you run out of petrol then I suggest alls well
Yes a 194 is the bee's knee's is'nt it but very pricy
Hope all this helps
Dave
Cheers for the help madaxe. The oil flow comparison is between now and a couple months ago. I know they run more oil out, it's just worse since it got blocked. The chain locking up is a common fault as I understand. This is the third bar and forth chain and yes they've all been hanging off. There's loads of theorys for what causes it but not many solutions.
