Finally back at it after a long delay (cc, I have a carbon copy of your condition) I'm back at it.
I'm making this Rat Fink for a friend of mine who's turning 70 Saturday. He a big time Hot Rod guy. It's about 3' tall and turning out pretty good.

I've never painted a carving before. It's a little too bright so I was thinking of trying antiquing it to tone it down a little. I bought some Minwax Gel Stain in walnut to try for antiquing. But like I say I've never tried it before. I need to get it antiqued and some kind of finish coat on by Saturday at 5:00PM. Am I on the right track or should I try something different? Any ideas on what I should use for the final coat?

Thanks for any help. Mike K

Try Cabots Aussy Timber Oil

August 7 2009, 6:25 AM

Hi Mike,

I use Cabots Aussy Timber Oil in the Natural base all the time and it will cut down on the color and give the carving a aged look. It will turn the white just a little but you will still know it's white. It will dry by Saturday no problem. Lowes here carriers it. Hope this helps. Great Rat Fink.

I use min wax golden oak stain in a spray can and wipe most of it off right away and that works for me.

torch...

You can give paint a distressed look, and tone it down a little by going over it lightly with a torch( map or propane) I do it when it's still wet, so it doesn't burn the paint. Too much heat will cause the paint to peel. THis carving looked nice as natural wood, but I wanted color, so I started painting it, and it was way too bright, so I sanded, dusted, and mixed some yellow, and torch treatments in.
