Started carving with a chainsaw in Feb, got my first carving bar in June and have been making lots of saw dust and kindling. I also use a power chisel to do some finer detailed work. Here are a few pictures of my stuff.
This guy is carved in ash. He's about 30 inches tall.
Thanks for looking
And great piece BTW ... love the surface work and the freedom of your cuts.
You have an interesting and unique style forming which is important in this age of video trained bear carvers.
You are off to a great start ... fun isn't it !!
Take care ... Angie
video trained bear carver that sounds like somebody i know! one day i carve a backus bear then doeran than wagner than yackley then flemmings than i carve my own . oh i forgot beach bear, id carve hundred dollar bills if they would spend. great job newbie keep posting those pictures and lets see sum bears .hal macintosh is quoted as saying carve bears, bears, and cigar store indians , who could argue with hal . thousands of dollars each year in my community is raised by bear raffles bear auctions gotta go i think i just saw a bear out my window.
Please don't hold it against me, but the residency is Washington, DC and the workshop is in the Shenandoah Valley of Va. Here is a quick skill builder I did of a vulture. He is my Halloween welcome guy. All saw and my first white pine piece. Haven't carved any bears and I haven't got any plans to carve any. I have too many ideas in my head of things to make and I am enough of a bear to deal with has it is.
Here the first carving I did with a chainsaw. Its boxelder wood (Acer negundo) I like how it holds crisp lines without much tear out. The skull is also boxelder.
I don't get over to Charles County, MD. very often. Most of my time is spent burning up I66 and 81. What made you leave MD?
I was younger then and decided there was more out there to see.I ended up in Seattle wa and i love it here even when its raining. We rust out here. The Shenandoah Valley is such a beautiful place especially now with the change of seasons. Its also rich in history.Take care Phil
Hahahaha! It's refreshing to see a sculptor here doing something so radically different than the norm!!! Do you have any formal art training, or background in other mediums?? Clay??Plaster?? Your pieces look like macquettes for bronze work. Doc
I spent a summer at an amusement park drawing portraits and carriacatures. Went to art school but really learned to draw at Kings Dominion. At that time in school being able to draw or carve or do anything technical was considered uncool. It still is today. The general concensus seems to be "If you can work with your hands you don't think" I dropped out of art making for 25+ years, stupid decision.
You seem to have a knack. I have hope you'll find yer way though. I hope to see more of your thoughts in wood/whatever. A lot of real sculptors use clay and plaster to think out their thoughts. You may have a big future, I hope so( even just to say I knew you when!!) Get to work you slacker! Doc
