Starting Out

I am looking for some advice. I had hoped to make a four poster bed with semi-carved bed posts. A friend had a scrap piece of 4x4 from a from a project so I snagged it.

My first test section was with a 1/2" router, grooves are about 1/2" deep. I then roughed the edges with hand chisels and painted white. The second test section was done with a angle grinder. Grooves are about 1/4" to 5/16 wide, they are smooth on the bottom and do have a little bit of color where the grinder disk burnt the wood.

This got me thinking. If my goal is to fill up a 8 foot longs 4x4 with a pattern of hundreds of strait cuts 1/4" to 1/2" wide, could a chainsaw be an option?

In full disclosure I have about 8-10 hours of chainsaw time cumulative in my life. However I figured this type of forum would be the best type of crowd to source info on chainsaws or any other type of tool.
