Once saw a large steel "S" shaped device for preventing logs from splitting.
It was about 12" across. Sort of a band of steel made 2: tall and 1/8 ' inch thick. It was sharpened on one edge.
You layed it on the end grain of the log and drove it into the wood and inch or so . Prevented the log from splitting.
Anybody know what these are called and where I might get some? And, do they work as intended?
Joe is right on. Wont stop from splitting, but does hold it together. We used them on RR ties. I've remover ties from the old steam days that looked as good as the day they were hand hewed and installed.
