The problem is that the tap needs to be undercut on the area above the threads so that it will tap further down than it normally would. Most standard 5/16-18 taps are long enough but need to be turned down to the minor diameter between the square where the tap wrench goes and the threads if you dont drill out the passage between the main bearing and the oil passage across the front of the block.
