A 400 in a ranchero is going to get worse mileage than a similarly built 408ci Clevland or Windsor?
Btw, for towing in 3rd your truck didn't do all that bad. My 2009 gets 11mpg towing 6500lbs and it has all the fancy efi, 5spd trans, and variable valve timing.
