The terminology comes from the flat head Ford era, it fell out of use by the early 1970s.

There was originally 1/2 race & full race cams. Then somebody got the idea to make a hotter street cam by using one lobe from a 1/2 race cam & one lobe from a full race cam ... thus they called it a 3/4 race cam.
