has anyone out there ever tried this swap since the 400 only came in full-frame cars, not unibody. The mounts are different than small block and 351c which interchange. Im planning a fmx trans with the big block style bellhousing. This motor is overlooked and plenty of potential for lots of torque and 2 not too heavy.

Knew a guy long ago who put a worked-on 400 in a '67 or '68 notchback Stang. Believe he used 429-460 mounts. Kind of nose heavy, compared to the SBF, but it had prodigious grunt. Some of the Chivvie guys might edge him in a full quarter, but none of them tried him from a roll more than once. The torque graph was as flat as Kansas, and way up there from idle till it ran out of air.

429-460 mounts NOT FIT!

July 28 2007, 1:33 PM

429 460 mounts will not fit a 351m 400. those engines have there own mount setup. the 429 460 are like an fe engine. you will have to make a set of mounts. you come modify a set from a 72 torino.

Chris your thread reference didnt link....

A 400 with the price motorsport intake adapters to use a 351C 4V intake and a set of 4V heads could be a nasty combo.....plenty of cubes for the 4V ports.

400 fairlane update

July 31 2007, 6:49 PM

found 3 different styles of mounts avalible for the 351m-400 if anyone is interested, One for the 72-76 torinos, elites, 77-79 tbirds,77-79 ltdII. this mount bolts directly to the frame crossmember. the other is for the 71-78 full size ltd.this bolts to a stand that bolts the crossmember. This would be the mount Id start with. I figure all you need to have done is cut off the ears and have new ones fabed on with horizontal bolt distance changed 2 inches further apart. see pics in last post. the ltd mount is shorter from bolt hole left to the one on the right than the torino style which adds another 4 inches to the distance, as far as my fairlane is right in the middle of these 2 styles. another easy possibility is the truck style without the ears but a single bolt that protrudes from the center of the mount. You could fabricate custom stands(between the mount and the frame of the car. for any of the above mounts. I would not think this would be too difficult. fyi the distance from the rear of the block to the mount area is identical to the 302-351w or c. so front to rear positioning should present no problem. also I saw a 68 cougar with a 400 installed and no cutting was involved.

The only thing I worried about

July 31 2007, 7:42 PM

was header clearance to the steering box. Looks tight in the picture, should have dug out the 4V heads and tested the fit.
