Automatic shifter, which one should I buy?

It's time to replace my automatic shifter in my Clevo powered Mustang.
I have a forward pattern valve body on an AOD. My B&M Mega shifter is worn out. I have the B&M required trans lever installed in my case, by it isn't a big deal if I have to swap it to match the new shifter.
What shifter do you guys use that is trouble free? This is my second Mega shifter and they just don't last with me pounding on it at the strip...
I want to get something that will last and is easy to use. You know how things get when you stage to deep and rush to get it in reverse, then forward. I start thrashing to hard. On the Mega shifter, you can't get it into reverse unless you are in drive to pull up the lever. When I roll up to the lights, I'm in first. That is a lot of clicking and pulling and jammin at the right time. Know what I mean Verne?
I need something easy, I'm gettin old.....

B&M

December 23 2007, 8:44 PM

I run a B&M Pro-Stick. Actually, its all I have ever used, and other than melting one cable from a tie breaking and allowing it to contact the collector, I have never had an ounce of trouble with either of them I have owned. The only reason I have owned two of them is due to having two different cars. The first one must have had 1400 passes on it and was trouble free, and this one must have close to 1000 passes on it and is also trouble free. Plus, there is one in my gf's car, her dad's car runs one, as does her brother's car, and none of them have ever had an ounce of trouble with them.

This one?

Is this the one? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/B-M-PRO-STICK-RACE-SHIFTER-GM-Ford-Chrysler-80701_W0QQitemZ140066241120QQcmdZViewItem
If so, how do you work the levers? I see two, one small red one and a finger grip one.

Thats the one

The small red lever is for reverse. You stick the handle in nuetral, push the red lever forward, then the shifter will go into nuetral. The bigger lever is for changing gears. It's pretty straight forward. To go into second, you either push or pull it to the next gear (depending on your valve body), then to go into high, you have to squeeze the lever for it to dis-engage the detent and go into the next gear.

Here's kind of a lousey pic of mine.

OK, more questions

I can see (I think) where this shifter would work well with a reverse pattern shift. Oh, no picture showed up ....
I have a forward pattern.
Since the lever has to be squeezed to change into 'High' gear, would that mean I have to squeeze the lever and push the ball forward to shift from 2nd to 3rd?
In my case is this correct? I keep pulling or sequencing the shifter ball into first (like my Mega shifter, each 'chunk' or movement ratchet's it into the next position).
Now the shifter ball is all the way back.
To shift to second I simply ratchet the ball forward one click.
To go to third I have to squeeze the handle and push the ball forward?

Then to get it from drive (3rd) to neutral, I have to push the red lever and not squeeze the handle?
From Nuetral, can I simply go to reverse or park or do I have to play with the red lever and handle?

Please try to explain the operation so a 12 year old can understand it.
Thanks

That shifter will work with any style of valve body with the simple change of the gate plate. I started off running a forward pattern, and switched a reverse pattern. I bought a new gate plate and it was fine. And actually, I have the same shifter in the car with the 'glide that I had with my C4. I simply bought a glide gateplate and swapped it out. If I want to go back to my C4, all I have to do is put the reverse pattern 3 speed plate back on and I'm set to go.

"Now the shifter ball is all the way back"
Correct

"To shift to second I simply ratchet the ball forward one click."
Correct, simply push it forward to the next "stop".

"To go to third I have to squeeze the handle and push the ball forward?"
Correct again.

"Then to get it from drive (3rd) to neutral, I have to push the red lever and not squeeze the handle"
Incorrect. To go to nuetral, you do not mess with the red lever, just squeeze the handle and push forward. To go to nuetral, you push the red handle forward, then squeeze the handle and push forward. Generally to change most of the gears, you have to squeeze the handle. I instered a pic of the shifter in my gf's car with the handle squeezed so you can see what happens at that point, and see the indents in the gateplate.

I dont know if I'm smart enough to explain so a 12 yr old can understand. I probably just confused the heck out of ya.

I've appreciated your help and advice over the past year and just wanted to say thanks. Thanks to all you who post here and make this a fantastic informational resource.

I just wanted to say I got a smile out of your "explain it so a 12 year old can understand" I'm the same way but I think I really was smarter at 12 than I am now at 43. Too many kids man! LOL

MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL from me and my family to all of you and yours.

Dave
