I see all the aftermarket heads for sale now but it makes me wonder one thing. In the 70's racers spent so much time on high port plates for the exhaust. Everything I have read talked about the exhaust flowing so badly. So why is it that from what I see the new heads are not really that much better than the old 4 barrel heads. Sure they are lighter but I saw a set of factory 4 barrel heads on Ebay I still wish I would had won the bid on. The flow numbers after the high port plate and intake work was as high or higher than any brade new head designs. Am I missing something????

Exhaust Efficiency is just as important as intake

Goin' with the Flowin'

My home/hack ported 2V exhaust port flowed 220CFM on the bench and my 4V port flowed 199. But the stuffed 4V intake port at 220cc flowed 345, or about 100 CFM better than the 180cc 2V port.

What I worried more about was getting a smooth transition from the port to the header pipe because my shock tower car had to have bends pretty quick off the port flange. Rounded and smoothed the roof and tried to help the exiting gas get into the pipe with a min of hassle.

Same deal on the intake - I spent a lot of time making sure the intake and head ports lined up smoothly and the gasket didn't poke into the air stream. Air is gonna do stuff, just try not to get in the way.
