the frog Cheryl got from her dog as present was probably flattened by a car.
We frogs, as human beings too, sometimes do not watch street traffic when crossing a road - and get flattened. Cheryl's dog was probably too lazy to hunt and to present her with a juicy fat long-tailed rat.
A traffic-flattened frog is a poor replacement, I think.
