We will probably have to modify the script from the original version though. (Old Willy Shakespear wasn't bad... in his day... BUT!)
I'll be the script writer of course!

Modifying the script

April 27 2003, 6:00 PM

Romeo & Juliet is a rather outdated script, as good old Lennie Bernstein knew, when he modified it to "West Side Story".
Am anxious, what modifications the captain has in mind.
But he better not hire our Navigational Computer as ghostwriter.

Well, it seems to me.....

The balcony scene from the original script could be modernised to the centre of a shopping mall .

And the 'olde English' speech from Juliet should be updated from .... "Romeo, Romeo, ... wherefore art thou Romeo?", to a more acceptably modern "Romeo, Hey! Romeo! .... Where are ya ?"

Suggestions to script changes

April 29 2003, 9:55 PM

The center of a shopping mall is a fantastic setting !
There is always a fountain, out of which we frogs hop, and do the "Shopping twist"
We will sing :" Julia shops, Julia shops, until she drops !"
So the bloody business with a dagger can be avoided. Julia dies from carrying too many shopping bags.
But : How to get Romeo below ground ?
Any ideas ?

set design

We need a trap door with a ladder underneath. We can't let any of the actors near it, however. They might fall in because the workmanship around here has been very shoddy.

Why, every single night recently Mary Claire has had to go to the theatre and restore damaged curtains, supervise the shoring up of sagging stages, and risk her neck on ladders. She isn't in a good mood, let me tell you. I think maybe a shopping spree (with lots of bags) would be a good idea.

GREAT IDEA !

Picture this.... Exhausted by a marathon shopping expedition, Juliet struggles to her home... heavily laden with shopping bags and parcels.

Romeo.... like any smart bachelor .... slept in, and didn't make it to their meeting place at the mall.
He explains to Juliet... " I was delayed.... I met an old friend. Alas, Poor Yorrick, I knew him well"
