This is mostly info from the anime. But considering the Jojo translation scans are halfway through the story and everything seems consistent from lines to camera angles, I doubt there are any differences.
Daniel J. D'Arby looks similar to Dudley the boxer from Street Fighter. The differences being that he's white (also English I believe), not nearly as built and has weird guill-like markings under his eyes.
His Stand is called Osiris and its power is that if someone was to gamble their soul against him and lose (including mentally losing hope), then Osiris would appear and remove the man's soul, transforming it into a poker chip. D'Arby has a whole case filled with these poker chips.
Joseph, Jotaro, Abdul, Polnareff and Iggi (Kakyoin was in the hospital) want around Egypt, asking if anyone could tell them where Dio's mansion was located via a photo of it. In a bar they found D'Arby who admitted to knowing where it was. But instead of accepting Joseph's money, D'Arby offered it in a bet.
Polnareff volunteered. Instead of cards, D'Arby pointed out a cat from far away. He took two pieces of meat and tossed them outside. He had Polnareff bet on which piece the cat would go for first. He convinced Polnareff to gamble his soul as the Frenchman thought he was just joking. Despite his logical reasoning, the cat went for the other one. Osiris appeared and removed his soul.
"My name is Daniel J. D'Arby. And this is my cat."
Of course the other guys got ready to beat his face in, but he warned them that if he died so would Polnareff.
Abdul grabbed him by the collar with his fist out.
"You want to kill me right now? Go ahead. Do it. That way he dies too."
"Listen... you won't get out of this in one piece."
"Do you remember what you were doing on September 22nd, 1984, around 11:15 pm?"
"What are you going on about?"
"I remember... I was gambling with Steven Moore in California. He said exactly what you said to me just before. This is him now. The one below him is his father. And the one next to him is his wife."
Joseph volunteered to gamble for Polnareff's soul. He poured a glass of wine to the top and explained the rules. They would go back and forth, putting coins into the glass. First to cause it to spill would lose. D'Arby accepted.
D'Arby started by putting five coins in instead. Next Joseph put one in, but it was definately at its limit. D'Arby got up to inspect the glass and spent about a minute studying it. Then he dropped in one more coin. It didn't spill.
Joseph freaked out from that and before he could even try putting another coin in, he mentally gave up and lost his soul to Osiris.
Jotaro realized that D'Arby put a piece of chocolate on the glass, which along with the intense sun, caused the wine to evaporate slightly. D'Arby mentioned that cheating is fine if you don't get caught.
Jotaro volunteered to take D'Arby on in poker, D'Arby's specialty. Jotaro revealed that his Star Platinum was so precise that it could tell the exact order of cards in the deck after D'Arby had shuffled them. This convinced Daniel J. that they should get a third party to shuffle. Abdul brought in a boy who was playing near the bar. The kid accepted the invitation.
With no real explanation, the soul chips for Polnareff and Joseph were transformed into six chips while Jotaro had his own six chips with his likeness. The boy dealt the first hand and D'Arby barely won.
After the boy dealt the second hand, Jotaro claimed that he didn't want any more cards. This surprised D'Arby, considering Jotaro didn't even look at his cards yet. He figured Jotaro was only bluffing.
Then Daniel saw Jotaro was smoking a cigarette. D'Arby wondered about that considering he didn't even see Jotaro put it on his lips or light it. Then he briefly saw the Star Platinum for a second and became paranoid. Looking back at Jotaro, he saw he was now drinking a glass of juice. D'Arby started sweating as he was unsure if Jotaro was cheating or not.
The boy, who was really a minion of D'Arby, assured him that he gave Jotaro horrible cards. D'Arby himself had four kings which was barely beatable.
Jotaro tossed in all his chips. D'Arby saw it and raised him more. Abdul allowed Jotaro to bet his soul as well. D'Arby tossed in even more and suggested that Jotaro could bet Kakyoin's soul as well. Jotaro agreed and raised his mother's soul. Confident, D'Arby was about to call. But Jotaro interrupted.
They couldn't turn over their cards yet. D'Arby had to gamble something that was worth Holly Joestar's soul. Jotaro suggested that if he won, D'Arby would have to reveal the secret to Dio's Stand. D'Arby began to sweat profusely. He tried his hardest, but the words "I call" could not leave his mouth.
He collapsed.
Mentally he had given up. As he lay on the floor, screaming in fear of what Dio would have done if he were to reveal the World's power, all of his chips began to free themselves. This included Polnareff and Joseph, who had woken up from the ordeal.
Jotaro turned over his cards to reveal a crappy hand. He laughed about it, saying that if he knew his cards were that bad he would have cracked under the pressure. Abdul was close to tearing his head off
The boy accidentally let it slip that he gave Jotaro bad cards and ran away in fear of Jotaro.
Abdul approached D'Arby and asked about where Dio's mansion was. He told them it was in Old Cairo. Then Abdul asked about Dio's secret. Daniel J.'s only reaction was horrific, psychotic laughter as he cried and rolled into fetal position. The good guys left, feeling that he had nothing more to offer them.
Later on, Jotaro, Joseph and Kakyoin met up with Terrance D'Arby, Daniel J.'s brother. His deal was similar only not nearly as cool. He could bring people into videogames where he would also gamble on souls. His Stand could read minds, but Terrance could only find out information about its findings by asking yes or no questions.
Concerning D'Arby's quest in FAJ, it's worth mentioning that he appeared in the first few chapters as a friend of Violence Unlimited. This could work to his advantage in gaining souls by betraying his friends.
