They should have done Will Adams' story instead. He was an Englishman that was stranded in Japan for ten years and went native. It'd have been a bit less schmaltzy.
(I have vauge memories of Clavell's Shogun having something to do with that. I might be wrong here, especially as I never read or saw Shogun.)
Which isn't to say I didn't love Last Samurai. It just could have been less Mary Sue-ish.
