electrical woes... opinions wanted...

finally putting my x back together after the shell has been sitting in the garage for the last year with fresh paint... got the wiring harness back in and everything works just like it did when I was driving it with a couple of exceptions....

highbeams... I get highbeams when I click the switch back but when I click it over to keep the highbeams on all the time, I get no lowbeams or highbeams... any ideas? my guess is the the switch in the steering column is fried... i dunno...

dash lights... I notice the two little bulbs that light up the centre console vent and heater control panel light up very well... that is intil I insert the the bolt that grounds and holds the bulb for the fibre optics... as soon as that bulb grounds and lights up, the other two bulbs give about %50 less light... will the brown wire mod correct this problem?

the switch in the centre console that is supposed to dim the dash lights or something... does the thing even work? I remember it never worked before and I'm wondering if anyone has an X1/9 that has a dimmer that actually does work... I'm probably getting anal with minor things like this, but after all this work, I might as well make sure EVERYTHING works...
