Keep original or modified
A couple post before Bob Brown talked about “looking for opinions on staying or going concours” condition of our cars, and I agreed with Vernice post request.
***I believe this is where the original concept of 'Concours' condition originated. IMO, some cars are ideal for this type of treatment, others not. In my view, it would be a travesty to modify a Packard 12, CORD, Dusenberg or other similar pre-war American car, Euro cars like Bentley, Rolls Royce, Daimler Benz, Maybech, Citroen, Hispano Suza, Bugatti and others should be preserved as built, delivered as bits of very significant automotive history.
Cars like the X1/9, Lancia Scorpiacarlo, Lotus Europa, and etc. are basically un-finished works that went into production and was never fully developed. This is the primary reason for my intersest in these cars, they are basically a un-finished Italian kit cars with many, many possible way of improvement and personal expression of what the car can be.***
I wont talk about “concours conditions” because my car is so far to enter on this term.
Keep original or modified this is the question.
4 stages same car
When I fixed my X1/9 1979 for the first time I tried to keep as “original”, but I feel it looks “generic like any toyota corolla” thru the years I changed of mine and tried to customize but always tried to keep “original” just a little, the original paint was very damage and I though “ keep original or modified”. Same things happen with the dashboard, rugs and seats were very damage.
I painted on Black and a nice set of British wheels but I didn’t like it, Then i changed the paint color for Imola Yellow, something more attractive to my own taste, exchange the wheels for originals cromodora iron cross wheels matching the background color with the body and I kept on this conditions for a couple years, but I tought on something more aggressive, somebody directed his comments about my car as “normal” and touched my feelings about my car, I always liked the first X1/9 Europe model, and I exchanged the bumpers, side marker lights, front markers, custom exhaust, cromodora Daytona wheels, customized fender badges and all interiors from a grand finale 87.
Keep original or modified, my X1/9 is not a significant model, it doesn’t have a particular VIN, it’s not a “super special series” mine is just an other brick from the wall, I guess to keep original or modified is just personal taste. I liked how it looked my X1/9 when I fixed for the first time, but I’m very glad to keep my X1/9 as is now.
What do you think, do you have some pictures before-after..
