Mechanical versus electrical fuel pump

Eric Hamilton (Durham NC)

Other than being what the car came with, is there any reason to prefer the mechanical fuel pump on a carbed 1300 (1974)?

Mine died and I just finished replacing it with another mechanical, for no better reason than that I had a new mech pump on a shelf already. But it was a bit of a nuisance to install, cutting gaskets to get the exact right standoff from the block, removing the oil filter because it's in the way (well, I was changing oil at the time so no big deal)...

Next time I may try an electric fuel pump. Haven't looked closely, but it seems as if I could use the relay and power for the carb cooling fan which I've removed long ago... let voltage at the coil trigger the relay so the pump will switch with the ignition. Unless there's a reason why I should prefer the mechanical?
