I recently picked up a 1981 X with an Uno Mk1 turbo motor in it. I plan to put that engine in my 75.
On closer inspection, I think the turbo has problems. It is the IHI RHB5. Perhaps the people with turbo experience could provide their opinions - it would be much appreciated! (Thanks Eric A. for your input so far).
*Starts up no problem
*Runs smooth, idle OK
*Turbo spins up and generates boost according to a gauge I installed
*Puffs blue smoke when you jab the throttle
*I let it cool down, removed the turbo inlet hose and checked the turbine shaft
*There is considerable play in the shaft (up and down, probably 2-3mm). Spins free though.
Everything I have read suggests that the turbo will probably be toast shortly. Also, I have read/heard that it can not be rebuilt easily although kits are available. I have seen a lot of other turbos for sale, but nothing quite this small. Eric suggested a Ford Probe turbo might fit directly.
Does anyone else have suggestions? Such as alternate turbo's that will bolt up?
I suppose upgrading to a Garrett T25 is an option, but would I then need a specific exhaust manifold?
All input is appreciated. Thanks!
