Black bumper finish question...

September 8 2008 at 5:44 AM

Hi all...

What is the finish on the late x1/9s with the black bumpers?... paint? powder coat? Other?...

The rear bumper on my '86 has a few sctaches and nicks... and I'd like to clean it up over the coming winter... just curious what the original finish was...

I have always thought the OEM satin black faded too easily and...

...was not up to par with the rest of the interior / exterior.

I have seen a really nice turned out x with Harley Davidson Black Powder Coated bumpers and believe powder coast to be more durable.

My trouble is finding a oven / dryer big enough for sway bars and bumpers.

If you are going to do this at home, Dupli-Color has a 2 stage Satin Black and Satin clear that is very durable and would probably look nice.

Best regards,
Kevin

I opt for the Duplicolor Bumper Black as I can do touch-ups or resprays rather quickly, cheaply and easily and not get mad at myself for spending a lot of money on a professional job on the bumpers only to have them get nicked up and scratched. All part of routine maintenance

As Kevin and Rudy said... I use TRIM BLACK... but really don't...

... know if it is any different than BUMPER BLACK.  I've never used the two stage stuff though... but like Rudy, I find that touch ups are EASY and almost undetectable, even if just "spotted".  I could probably buy 40 cans of paint compared to one professional powdercoating... and if powder coating gets scratched... I don't think it can be repaired as easily.

OR... you can alsway do as Ed CeCarbo did and have his aluminum bumpers professionally stripped, smoothed and polished to an almost chrome-like luster!  THey are impressive... but could use a touch of a TRIM BLACK accent to downplay them a bit, IMHO!
